SWIMMING POOL HEATER
AND SPA HEATER SIZING
Follow these guidelines to
be certain that your heater
will be the correct one for your pool and/or spa.
Be sure that
the heater you choose will be capable of raising the water
temperature from ambiant to 80 degrees in a 24 hour period.
It is a good idea to base sizing on the coldest ambiant
temperature because "ambiant" is variable.
Generally speaking, you should install the largest size
heater that will fit within your space and budget. This will
provide more rapid heating and reduces operation time,
extending the life of the unit.
For each degree of difference between the air and water, an
uncovered pool loses about 10 BTU's per hour per square foot
of surface. For example, a 500 square foot pool with an 80
degree water temperature on a 70 degree day requires 50,000
BTU's per hour simply to maintain the temperature. Since
most heaters are actually in the 80-85% efficiency range,
the actual requirement would be more in the neighborhood of
around 63,000 BTU's.
